From its birth the United States has been the worlds greatest hope for equality and freedom for all people. Though the original promise has yet to be fully realized, it has struggled toward perfection through over two centuries of blood sweat and wars. The steady evolution of that promise has been the bulwark from which we have defeated all foreign attempt at its destruction. But, it has one potentially fatal weakness. One of the greatest of our countrymen was among the first to warn us:
“From whence shall we expect the approach of danger? Shall some trans-Atlantic military giant step the earth and crush us at a blow? Never. All the armies of Europe and Asia…could not by force take a drink from the Ohio River or make a track on the Blue Ridge in the trial of a thousand years. No, if destruction be our lot we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of free men we will live forever or die by suicide.”
― Abraham Lincoln
That suicide is now imminent. It approaches in the form of an insidious combination of greed apathy and the myth of something for nothing. Many who have risen to positions of power among us have learned to manipulate the safe guards in our constitution and seize command of our government. They maintain that control by manipulating an increasingly blind public. Many among us have abandoned pride and love of country. In its place a compulsion for instant gratification, a sense of unlimited entitlement and compulsive self-interest demands satisfaction. There is no regard for the catastrophic price we, along with generations to come, will have to pay. As a country we are blind. As a people we are rapidly degenerating into triable factions and class war. As individuals we are allowing ourselves to be led by politicians and king makers. they’re determined to expand their power with total disregard for preserving the United States Constitution and its freedoms so many have given so much to protect.
I am but a single voice and claim no great wisdom but I will be blind no more to the suicide of my country. Please consider my future comments and join in the discussion regardless of whether you agree or completely disagree. I only ask that you do so respectful of other opinions and explain the reasons for your own.
